澎湖天后宫创建于明万历三十二年（1604年）之前，清康熙二十二年（1683年）福建水師提督施琅击败明郑守軍将澎湖纳入清版图，施琅有感于妈祖庇佑，奏请皇帝敕封为“护国庇民妙灵昭应仁慈天后”，准奏后从此改为天后宫。澎湖天后宫目前样貌为日治时期的1922年撤基重建的，由士绅富商募款而建，特別聘请原籍是广东潮州的木匠师兰木负责施工，并在后进建有二层楼式的“公善楼”，做为马公街商民聚会场所及讲授汉文的场所。
